Being able to recognize and create patterns is an important step to aquiring number sense. Counting is patterning, adding and subracting recognizes sequence, and multiplcation is about following patterns. Being able to create patterns means that you can recognize things that are alike (odd numbers, numbers divisable by three, polygons) and things that are different.
